Arthur was born in 1882. The 1891 Census records that he was living with his grandmother, Mary (a widow) in Everton, Liverpool. However when signing on as a Reservist in Warrington on 23rd January 1901 his address was given as simply ”Rainhill” and his occupation as a labourer.
Arthur spent 12 years as a Reservist before signing on as a Regular soldier and being sent to France with the British Expeditionary Force in August 1914. His mother and father are both listed as dead in 1914. He was discharged in December 1916 as being “no longer physically fit for service”. It is not known why.
