Edward was born in Edinburgh in 1895. His parents were William and Clara Hyde and he had an older brother Wilfred who was "killed in action" in July 1916 aged 21 at the Somme. Wilfred's name is inscribed on the Theipval Memorial. He had four younger sisters, Elizabeth, Jessie, Clara and Ethel.
In 1911, Edward worked in a wire bobbin mill and his father worked at the BICC factory in Helsby.
He had signed up for the Territorial's aged 14 and when war broke out he walked to Warrington to enlist in the KOSB. As his father was Scottish and he was born in Scotland he was accepted.
He went to fight in France at the Battle of the Somme but was sent home with trench foot and treated at Sheffield. He then returned to France and was on his way to Gallipoli but was pulled out due to him being an excellent shot and became a musketry instructor, but his hearing was damaged by the noise of the shells. He returned home to go to officer training (shortage of officers) and was promoted to Sergeant.
At the end of the war Edward was sent home as his father had died. He lived in Rainhill and became responsible for the upkeep of his mother and 4 sisters.
After the war was over Edward joined the Police Force in Liverpool. He married Harriet Battersby from Prescot and went to live in Church Place, Rainhill in the 1960's. Edward had a nephew named Wilfred - an Ambulance driver who was named after Edward's brother who was killed in the conflict.
