James Percy Maddaford was born in Edinburgh to William and Louisa Maddaford and later lived in Manchester. James was a manager for the Palatine Rubber Company, Market Street, Manchester and he married Florence Ousey in 1903. They had 2 children, but were separated in 1914. Florence died in 1917.
In March 1915 James enlisted with his brother Edgar to the 16th Manchester E Company, 20th Platoon - 90th trench mortar battery. On 14th Jan 1916 he was admitted to the 98th Field Ambulance (sick), but returned to duty 3 days later on 17th Jan 1916.
In February 1916, The Times reported that James and his brother Edgar had been wounded, but no further information has come to light.
In January 1918 James was Invalided home with trench foot to the 2/1st General Hospital, Dudley Road, Birmingham. Later he moved to Maxistoke VAD Hospital and then was moved to a Rainhill VAD Hospital near Liverpool.
In March 1919 he was transferred to the Army Reserve and returned to Manchester after the war.
James died in 1951.
