According to the 1911 Census Ralph was living at Church Place, Rainhill with his wife Edith and daughters Lillian and Edith.
His occupation was that of a coal miner.
He enlisted in September 1914 but was discharged in May 1915 as unfit for service after contracting a pulmonary infection following a bout of influenza which left him with a constant cough and breathlessness, which for a short time led to him being put on light duties.
On returning to the UK he went back to his old job as a miner but had to give it up after six months due to his condition. He then found work as a gardener.
Note. On the 1901 and 1911 Census Ralph's name is spelt Pointon but on all his army papers it is spelt Poynton
