William Edward Taylor was born in Preston Brook, Cheshire on 11th May 1893 to parents Sarah and Thomas. They had moved to Rainhill by 1911. He had three sisters and a brother. A boarder named Richard Bentham was also living in the same house. Both William and his father were railway clerks.
At the outbreak of hostilities William was living with his sister Winifred in Longton Lane. Winifred later married another survivor, Phil Lynch and the house in Longton Lane became their marital home.
William’s jobs included an accounts clerk at Earlstown Carriage Works and relief station master for British Rail L&N.W.R. and L.M.S.Railways.
William attested as a Reservist on 4th December 1915 and was mobilised on 27th December 1916 after which he was posted to France with the British Expeditionary Force. In 1917 he spent some time in Staly Hospital and was later promoted to Corporal. He was still serving in 1919. It is believed that during the war he served constructing and operating light railways in Northern France.
He later met and married May Beatrice Davies in Camberwell, London where he worked as a supervisor of ticket classification with British Railways (L.M.R. H.Q.), The Grove, Watford.
William died on 2nd April, 1967 in Angmering. Sussex.
