John Moffatt Thompson was born in 1891 to Bessie and Thomas who was a joiner. By 1901 the family was living at 14 Victoria Terrace

John enlisted on 5th August 1914 at St. Helens.  He was living at 747 Eltonhead Road, St. Helens with his wife Mary and working at Sutton Heath and Lea Green Colliery.

On 27th January 1915 he was discharged as "unfit for service". Records show he was no longer physically fit for war service.  He had been a rifleman and had been of good character.

John died on 28th September 1957 aged 65 by which time he and wife Mary Elizabeth (who died 12th January 1982) were living  at 55 Rainhill Road but he died at 52 Sunbury Street, Thatto Heath. He was buried in St Ann's Churchyard, Rainhill on 2nd October. He left £829.00

Picture
John Moffatt Thompson spent his early years living in Victoria Terrace with his parents. Outwardly these houses seem little changed since John was living at number 14. A big difference is that in 2015 it is hard to photograph the houses due to the number of cars lining the road.
