Arthur was born in 1895 and according to the 1901 Census he was living at 262 Westfield Street, St Helens with his parents Alfred and Amy Jane and one brother, George.

By the time Arthur enlisted he was living at Hill View, Mill Lane, Rainhill. His occupation was given as Post Office worker (telegraphist).

Records show that initially he was sent (presumably because of his experience as a telegraphist) to the Fenny Stratford Signal Depot in Bletchley, Buckinghamshire. He went on to serve in France and was demobbed in at Heaton Park, Manchester in February 1919.
