Bertie was born in 1895 and on the 1901 Census the family are shown living in Houghton Street but by 1911 they had moved to Victoria Terrace. Bertie, then aged 16 was living with his parents, Alfred and Mary Ellen and sisters Amy and Elsie.

In the 1911 Census his occupation was given as a clerk with the London and North Western Railway Company and was based at Lime Street Station, Liverpool.  By the time of his enlistment in 1916 he had worked there for 7 years.

He enlisted on 8th February 1916 but was subsequently discharged as “unfit for service” on 3rd January 1918 due to a deformed right foot and weak knee caused when during a Physical Training Course, at Blackpool, he suffered a severe fracture of the right ankle.

Army records show that he did not serve overseas.

By November 1920, he had left Victoria Terrace and was living at 9 Fallowfield Road, Sefton Park, Liverpool.
