In 1881 George lived in Ellaby Road, Rainhill with his mother Margaret who was a grocer and brother Peter, sisters Ellen and Mary Jane, who subsequently married next door neighbour John Abraham, father of George Henry Abraham who also survived the war.

It appears that following the marriage John Abraham went to live with Mary Jane and her mother, widow Margaret as the 1911 Census shows, although there is no mention of George.

George was born in 1868 and his occupation on enlistment at the age of 47 was given as a collier. He joined the Pioneers in London in October 1915.

Copies of his records in our possession show his signature confirming that he received the Victory, the Star and the British War Medals in 1921. It is also stated that he was a man of good character and that at some time during his military service he was injured and spent some time in Lichfield Military Hospital.
