John was born in Rainhill in 1890 but by 1891 was living in Littleworth near Cannock with parents Thomas and Jane. According to the 1911 Census the family had moved again to Lowton, Newton-Le-Willows where both father and son were miners. By this time he had three sisters, Sarah, Jane and Bessie.

John enlisted in Warrington on 3rd
September 1914, however following a medical examination he was found unfit for service due to an old injury to his right knee and was discharged “unfit for service” in November 1914. On his discharge papers his address was shown as 1 Council Cottages, Lowton.
