Layton’s military records are unavailable. The records of many WWI soldiers were lost during the Blitz.

Regimental history states that the regiment landed at Cape Helles, Gallipoli, in July 1915. It was evacuated in February 1916 to Egypt and served in Mesopotamia (now Iran) and India. Layton is known to have served in India from 1916 to 1918.

Layton was a quarryman at Welsby’s Quarry in Rainhill and he died on 29th October 1936.  He is buried in St. Ann's churchyard.
