Thomas was born in 1894 in Rainhill and was living at Holt Lane in 1901 with his parents Thomas and Mary, his brothers Henry, William and Edward and sisters Mary and Emma.
The 1911 Census records him at 52 Houghton Street, Prescot. He was living with his father, a broach (watch-tool) maker, mother and siblings who had now been joined by Richard aged 4. Thomas was also working as a broach maker when he enlisted in the Territorials in 1911 aged 17.
Thomas signed on as a regular soldier in 1915 and was sent to France with the British Expeditionary Force.
