Thomas was born in 1883 and by the time of the 1911 Census was living with his wife, Edith (nee Barnes) and in-laws Isaac and Margaret Mawson at West View, Longton Lane, Rainhill. Thomas was a builder and listed as a works foreman on his Attestation Form.
Thomas and Edith had married in 1910 at Christ Church, Eccleston and by the time he enlisted in December 1915 aged 32 they had two children, George and Beatrice.
By 1917 Thomas had been promoted to Lance Cpl., but following a charge of improper conduct towards a Warrant Officer he lost his stripes.
He was demobbed in 1919.
