Rifleman Alfred Ball of the South Lancashire Regiment
Born in 1891, Alfred lived at The Holt with parents James & Jane Ball.
However by the time of the 1901 Census, 10 year old Alfred was without a mother, Jane having died in the intervening period. Alfred was still living at The Holt with his widowed father and siblings Emily (23), Jane (21), Richard William (17), Benjamin (16) and Florence (8).
By 1911 the family had seen a reduction in numbers and only James, Benjamin and Alfred, who was working as a broach maker, were still living at The Holt, the others having married or left home.
All that is known about Albert’s war service is that he died on 4th August 1916, aged 25. His name is on the brass plaque in St. Ann’s Church and on the 'original' WWI Memorial in St Ann's Churchyard.
He is commemorated in Thiepval Memorial Cemetery.
