Richard Allen was awarded the DCM for gallantry in action on 4th June 1915 in Gallipoli when he was wounded (reported in Manchester Evening News). The medal was presented at Todmorden Town Hall on 30th November 1915.
His DCM was awarded after being on sentry duty at an advanced post south of Krithia,Turkey when he heard noises in the bushes and although under heavy fire, went in and came across a Turkish Officer with a machine gun. He disarmed the officer and brought in both officer and machine gun.
Richard also appears in Edith Lidstone's Autograph Book
The text reads:
