Donald was born in 1894 and lived with his parents Robert and Janet in Ashdown Terrace together with his siblings George, Robert and Janet. His occupation was that of a carpenter.
He enlisted at St Helens in May 1915 and fought in France where records show that in July 1916 he was injured and admitted to hospital but returned to his unit in August of that year.
He was promoted to Lance Corporal in May 1918.
