Hill Street, Prescot
Thomas was born in Rainhill in 1879 and the 1991 Census shows him living in Hill Street, Prescot with grandmother Mary and brother Joseph. Even at that tender age Thomas was working as a “grocers shop lad”.
On his Attestation Form he said that he was in the South Lancashire Regiment but his service records are much damaged and almost unreadable.
Thomas enlisted for some unknown reason in Barnsley in 1914 and gave his address as “Rainhill”. Little is known of his service except that he served with the British Expeditionary Force and was discharged on 6th September 1919 at Pontifract.
