Frank was born in 1892 in Rainhill and lived at ‘Foot of Bridge’, Rainhill with father Frank William, an “attendant of the insane” and mother Jane and sister Sarah Jane.

By 1911 his father had died and he was living with his mother and step father, sisters Sarah, Marjorie and Violet, step sisters Nora and Mary and step brothers Arthur and John.

He enlisted in Prescot in September 1914 at the age of 17 years 6 months and gave his occupation as ‘apprentice mechanic’ at B.I.C.C. Prescot. He was not called up until February 1917 and was then posted to France. In January 1918 he was sent to the Canadian General Hospital in Bolougne suffering from trench foot and gunshot wounds to his right shoulder.

After a period of convalescence Frank was sent to Basra Camp at Rouen, where he suffered burns to both feet when hot tea was spilled on them. The injuries were considered serious enough to have him returned to England where he was treated at the Victoria Hospital, Netley and stayed there for ten weeks followed by nine weeks of convalescence. He was then sent to a training unit in Dublin before being demobilised on 28th February 1919. His address was now 7 Victoria Road, Rainhill.

Frank was awarded the British War Medal and the Victory Medal.
