George was born in 1897 in Rainhill but by 1901 was living in Gateacre. In 1911 the family was living at Rookery Lodge, The Hall, Warrington Road (later to become Loyola Hall). His parents were Joseph and Emily and he had a brother John. His father Joseph was a gardener at The Hall and George’s occupation was that of apprentice wheelwright.

After enlistment in 1916 he was posted to Bombay, India. Records indicate that he stayed with his unit and was sent to Basrah, Iraq in 1919 before leaving the army on 13th April 1920.

Rookery Lodge was Loyola Hall's lodge nearest to Rainhill village. It was demolished many years ago.
