Frederick was born in 1895 and lived at 2 Houghton Street, Rainhill in 1911 with his father, Henry. He was a postman.
He enlisted in January 1916 and embarked to France in February 1917 as part of the BEF. Army records show that prior to leaving for France he was charged with “neglect while on duty” and received two extra fatigues.
In December 1917 he returned to England with a wounded leg.
In November 1918 he was discharged as “no longer fit for service” although no reason for this was given in his records.
We have in our possession copies of records showing his signature on receipt of the British War Medal and the Victory Medal.
The photograph below shows the Post Office on the corner of Houghton Street which would have been a familiar sight to Frederick as he carried out his postman's duties
