Harry was born in 1888 at Wilmere House, Bold. On the 1911 Census Harry was listed as a clerk, aged 16, the son of John and Mary Owen.

He enlisted on 31st August 1914 into the Royal Engineers as Sapper 6795, later to become 428477. On 8th July 1915 he was sent to Egypt, was injured and sent back to England to be nursed at Fazackerley Hospital, Liverpool. During his stay in hospital, he was nursed by Robina Dowell, a young nurse from Wales. They fell in love and married after the war and had a son, Alan. They built a bungalow in Warrington Road called Newbrynmally. Later Alan married Joan Hilton from Longview Road.

Harry also fought at Ypres and Gallipoli.

He was discharged in 1918 due to injuries received in battle.
