Rueben was born on 18
th April 1899 in Workington where he lived with his grandparents, Fletcher and Isabella and their son Peter at 39 Jane Street. (1901 Census).

By 1911 the Census records show him still living with his grandparents and their daughter, Ann Marie but they have now moved to Rainhill and living at 9 The Holt.

On 29th January 1918 Rueben who was then working as a tool setter was conscripted into the 4th Loyal Reserve Battalion of the North Lancashire Regiment as a private soldier with the number 57300. He gave his address as Rocklands, View Road, Rainhill and was garrisoned in Dublin.

On 12th February 1919 he was transferred into the King’s Regiment and given a new service number, 113851. He was promoted to Lance Corporal in August 1919 and posted to India. However he never made it as he had appendicitis and was disembarked in Cairo where he underwent an operation. Unfortunately subsequent complications required him to have further surgery and he was eventually sent back to England and discharged as unfit for service on 15th October 1920.

In November 1925 Rueben married Lily Pilkington at St Ann’s Church, Rainhill.
