Herbert was the son of Ernest and Ada Kate Englefield of Little Aldershot, Baughurst, Basingstoke. It is known he spent time in Rainhill, but when and at which hospital cannot be determined.
Herbert died of pneumonia on 19th May 1918 aged 19. He is buried in St. Paul's Churchyard, Kingsclere, Whitchurch, Hampshire.
