Arthur was married to Ada Watkinson and with their two children lived 77 Ewart Road, Forest Fields, Nottingham. Arthur was employed as a tram conductor.
He enlisted with the Sherwood Forresters (Notts & Derby Reg.) in Dec 1915 aged 26.
He was mobilised in April 1916 and posted overseas July 1916 to Oct 1916. Arthur served on the Somme.
The following details are provided by Stephen Nulty:
‘He went to France with his unit on 16th July 1916 and the following day was posted to the 17th Bn. They were out of the line at that time but were moved into trenches south of Beaumont Hamel on 02/09/16 and attacked the next day. 20 officers and 650 Other Ranks going into action and captured German front line. They suffered 454 casualties, killed, wounded and missing. After this they were at Bertrancourt 04/09/16, Mailly-Maillet Wood 06/09/16, front line 12/09/16, Beaussart 19/09/16, front line Serre 20/09/16 and Bertrancourt 30/09/16.’
Arthur arrived back in England on 4th October 1916 and was discharged in December 1916 as he "ceased to fulfil Army medical requirements".
Arthur received the postcard below showing soldiers at the Tower Hospital, Rainhill. Presumably, the sender is the soldier in the centre with his collar coloured blue.
The Big Push was the name given to the Battle of the Somme.
In the top right hand corner of the card, the wording we believe refers to a person "... on my left...", but we cannot be sure who or where this person is. If you can help please let us know via our Contact page.
