James Coen was born on 8th March 1893 in Liverpool.  

He joined the South Lancashire Regiment and was posted to France on 28th March 1915.

On 30th Nov 1917 James was taken prisoner whilst serving with the Machine Gun Corps. He was repatriated in December 1918.  James was entitled to the 1915 Star, British War Medal and Victory Medal.

The 1911 Census had him living with his mother Margaret at 5 Back Camp, The Holt, Rainhill.
