James was born in 1896 and by 1901 was living at 8 Victoria Place with parents James, a watchmaker and Elizabeth and brother John. By 1911 the family had grown with the additions of Mary, Harry and Robert.
James attested on 8th September 1914 in St Helens and gave his occupation as grocer’s assistant. He was discharged from the Army on 21st January 1916 after serving just 2 years. It is not known why.
