William was born in 1893 to parents Richard and Agnes. He had two sisters, Elizabeth and Agnes and two brothers Adam and Edward. They were living at Rose Cottage, Sutton Road, Rainhill.
William was a bricklayer.
After enlisting William embarked on the Empress of Britain to Basra via Durban and Bombay. He was subsequently posted to Feluja before returning to Britain at the end of the war on SS Chakdara on 23rd February 1919.
