​James Shaw was born in 1894 in Widnes and in 1901 was living in 15 Caroline Street, Widnes.

His father was Peter and he had a sister named Florence who became Florence McKay and by 1915 was living in the USA.

In 1911 James was a bootmaker. He enlisted 1st May 1916 when he was living in Fairs Row, Rainhill but was discharged on 14th August 1916 as "not likely to become an efficient soldier" due to paralysis of the right arm and foot.
