Joseph was born in 1894 and lived with parents Frederick and Mary and a brother also called Frederick in School Lane. Joseph's occupation was that of a gardener.
He enlisted in Warrington aged 22 in March 1916 and requested the Royal Army Medical Corps as his preference. However it was not to be and he went into the Royal Welsh Fusiliers, but was transferred to the 23rd King's Liverpool Regiment on 23rd April 1917 with a new number of 43242.
Although his Army medical records indicate that he had poor vision, it was not considered sufficient to reject him and he was duly conscripted.
It has not been possible to learn of his service overseas, but we know that he was demobilised on 11th December 1919.
