John was born in 1879 and lived at The Holt with his parents Peter and Kate and siblings Mary, Katherine, Owen, Annie and Kate (Census 1891). By 1911 he was married to Annie and had a son, Robert. He was a brass finisher and they lived at 5 Camp, The Holt.

In 1914 John and family were living at Parkers Row, Rainhill and John was working as a collier.
​

He enlisted in August 1914 but was discharged in October of that year as being considered “unfit for service” after persistent bad conduct.
​
