Lot was born in 1883 and lived in Holt Lane with his parents John and Lois and by 1911 had 6 siblings James, Arthur, Herbert, Alfred, Ernest and Lillian.
Lot worked as a brass moulder at BICC Prescot. In September 1914 he enlisted as a Reservist but had suffered with rheumatism and defective eyesight for many years and was subsequently discharged as unfit for service. There is no evidence that he ever served abroad.
