St. Bartholomew's Catholic Church
The church was opened and consecrated in 1840. Its founder and benefactor was Bartholomew Bretherton who at the time owned most of the land in Rainhill and lived in Rainhill Hall (now Loyola Hall) close to the church.
The building is of sandstone construction - perhaps because the Bretherton family owned the local sandstone quarry!
In 1949, an Italian styled bell tower was built at the side of the church.
The adjoining churchyard contains several graves and memorials to casualties of the Great War plus a number relating to the Stapleton-Bretherton family, descendants of Bartholomew.
