July 31st 1916 aged 21 years
Edward was born in Rainhill in 1895 to Elizabeth and James Charnock, a book-keeper and farmer. His grandfather William farmed at Manor Farm.

In 1911 Edward Charnock, an apprentice in the grain trade aged 16, was living at Rainhill Mount with his father James, a widower aged 63. He had 2 sisters Ida aged 24 and Mildred aged 20.  They had one domestic servant Hilda James aged 27.

He enlisted in Liverpool in September 1914 aged 20 and was described as a motor mechanic.

He was posted to France in November 1915 and in February 1916 he was appointed Lance Corporal (unpaid). In August 1916, he was reported missing on the Somme.

A witness stated that he and four others were killed outright by a shell.
