William was born in 1895 and according to the 1911 Census was, living in Ratcliffe Cottages with his mother, Elizabeth and brother, Richard. His occupation was that of a farm labourer.
He enlisted in March 1917 and was initially sent to Dover; however he was discharged as “unfit for service” in November 1917 having never served abroad. Records show that he had part of his right thumb missing after an accident while in Canada in 1914, not as a result of military service
In his records, he was described “sober and well behaved”.
