Walter was born in 1895 in Rainhill and in 1901 lived at Palatine Villas, Rainhill Road with his father George, a lunatic attendant, mother Sarah and brothers Arthur, Frederick and Horatio.
Walter signed up as a Territorial in 1909 at the tender age of 14 years 8months whilst already working as a joiner at Pilkington’s Glass Works and went into the Lancashire Engineers. During his time in the Army he served as a bugler. He joined the regular Army in 1913 and served abroad with the British Expeditionary Force.
