Wood was born in 1865 in Rainhill. His father was Samuel and he had two brothers, Samuel and John and three sisters, Harriet, Mary and Margaret.

At some point he had married Anna Maria Lloyd.

It appears that Wood was a regular soldier in the Royal Engineers, Ordnance Corps as Armourer Staff Sergeant 743 prior to the outbreak of WWI and served in a variety of countries including South Africa, Mauritius and Hong Kong, having joined the Army in 1883 aged 18 and left in 1903.

In 1914 he volunteered for service again and records show that he spent some time in Dublin. In October 1919 he volunteered for a further 5 months service before finally being discharged in 1920.

In 1914 Wood's occupation was that of a gunsmith. It has not been possible to find out where he lived in Rainhill but he gave his next of kin as his sister Mary Kerr of 103 Duke Street, St Helens.
